"The Price of Reading is Eternal Vigilance" (Blog #1)

In the article, "The Price of Reading is Eternal Vigilance" the author talked about their experience with books. It was odd to me that they gave books so much power, such a hold over their life. They had talked about only reading books after they felt they did it on their own time and not when the author demanded by buying the book. The article also intrigued me that they had so much respect for books that they had even thought they were too good for them, which before that, a book being too good for a person had never even crossed my mind. I always just saw them as a simple object, never something I had to wash my hands before touching. It was interesting when the author of the article talked about his 58 year-old friend that said he just learned how to read. Not how to read literally but how to really open his mind to what the author was feeling and not just what they had put on paper. That's when you know you've found a good book. A book that you feel connected to the authors feelings and how they saw the world and not just analyzing words on a page. And then they had a change of heart, instead of the books putting all the ideas in their heads, they made their own mark by adding their thoughts that agreed or disagreed with the author which I thought was inspiring. Instead of the books controlling their life, they had thoughts of their own on the topic to overwrite the one way thinking portrayed from the book.
